This achievement was made possible through effective mechanisation, digitalisation, and the application of cutting-edge technologies, such as Building Information Modeling (BIM) and 3D Concrete Printing, among others.

Vietnam launch: Škoda Auto celebrates key internationalisation milestone

Škoda Auto celebrated its market entry in Vietnam with a special event, co-hosted with local distribution and production partner Thanh Cong Group (TC Group)

Sales of imported vehicles will begin on 25th September in Hanoi at Škoda’s first dealership in the nation; local CKD production will start in 2024

Vietnam has the highest growth potential in the region and is the company’s strategic gateway to ASEAN and the broader Indo-Pacific region.

Chandigarh, 25 September 2023 – Škoda Auto has taken an important step in its internationalisation strategy today with its entry into the Vietnamese market. A celebratory event took place with representatives of the Vietnamese and Czech governments alongside Škoda’s local distribution and production partner, TC Group. Škoda Auto projects a rapid expansion of the dealer network to as many as 30 partners and an annual sales potential of over 40,000 units beyond 2030. The first models, starting with the Karoq and Kodiaq, will be imported from Europe. Local CKD production, planned to start next year, aims to leverage synergies due to the country’s proximity to India. Škoda views Vietnam as a gateway to the promising ASEAN region.

Škoda Auto celebrates market launch with celebratory event, plans to expand dealer network

The Czech car manufacturer presented the Kvasiny-produced SUV model series Karoq and Kodiaq, which will be the first models available on the local market. Customers can purchase these at the first Škoda showroom in Hanoi from 25 September onwards. Additional showrooms in central and south Vietnam are in the pipeline. The goal is to expand the dealer network to 20 Škoda dealerships by 2025 and 30 by 2028.

First models imported from Europe in 2023, start of local CKD production in 2024

Škoda has a well-defined roadmap for the Vietnamese market, with plans to expand its model portfolio in response to customer preferences. The Octavia and Superb models are slated for importation to Vietnam in the medium term. Additionally, the all-electric Enyaq family is being introduced to cater to the growing demand for electric vehicles among Vietnamese consumers.

Starting in the second half of 2024, Škoda will be tapping into significant regional synergies. By then, the first Kushaq vehicles will have been exported from the Pune facility in India to Vietnam for assembly from CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits, with the Slavia set to follow in 2025. Construction of a production line at the Viet Hung Industrial Park in Quang Ninh province by Škoda’s local partner TC Group is already underway. Based on market trends, there are ambitions to ramp up production, potentially assembling as many as 27,000 vehicles annually after 2027.

High growth potential and projected annual deliveries of over 40,000 units beyond 2030

The automotive market in Vietnam is exceptionally dynamic. At present, Vietnam is the fourth strongest automotive market in Southeast Asia. Moreover, with only 38 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants in a population of roughly 100 million people and given the anticipated national economic growth, Vietnam is emerging as the country with the highest growth potential in the region. The brand foresees annual sales of 30,000 units in the medium term, with that figure rising to more than 40,000 units after 2030. The capacity at the Viet Hung Industrial Park, where the TC Group-owned plant is located, could be used in the future to expand production with a view to potentially exporting Škoda models across the entire ASEAN region.

ACCA hosts Virtual Careers Fair, connecting finance professionals with prominent employers for 2,200 job opportunities  

The Virtual Careers Fair (VCF) drew attendees from across the country, demonstrating a strong interest in career opportunities in accounting and finance.

Chandigarh, September 25, 2023: The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) recently concluded its Virtual Careers Fair in India, providing a platform for accounting and finance professionals to connect with leading employers in the country. The event witnessed the participation of 3,121 visitors including students, affiliates and members demonstrating a strong interest and demand for career opportunities in the finance industry.

Mir shows his best with fifth in scorching Indian GP, Marquez authors classic comeback

Chandigarh, September 25, 2023: The first Indian Grand Prix will go down as a classic, and a highlight of the year for Joan Mir who earned his best result of the season. Marc Marquez showed the potential of the Honda RC213V as he put in an early podium challenge and impressive recovery.

All eyes were on Joan Mir who started in fourth place, Marini withdrawing due to injury, as the lights went out. The #36 maintained his position alongside the Repsol Honda Team machine of Marquez as the pair hunted the riders ahead. Looking comfortable, Mir held his own and settled into a comfortable fifth with Quartararo just ahead of him. Brad Binder would once again in the rear-view mirrors of a Repsol Honda Team RC213V as the South African hunted down Mir. An impressive save in the closing laps meant the double World Champion was forced to concede fourth place to the South African.

Rallying in the closing laps, Mir would end the race just over half a second behind Binder and take fifth place. This is Mir’s best result as a Honda rider and is a just reward for his and the team’s tireless work to improve their fortunes. Now heading to Honda’s home round in Motegi, Mir is aiming to continue this moment and once again show the potential of himself and the bike.

With a belly full of fire and motivation after a return to the Sprint podium, Marquez shot off the line and immediately hooked himself to the back of the leading trio. As Martin and Bagnaia traded blows, the #93 sensed his opportunity and turned up the pace to stay with them. Unfortunately, at Turn 1 on lap five, Marquez fell but there was no waiting around an in true Marquez style, he remounted within just eight seconds and rejoined in 16th place.

From here, he cut through the field and found himself back inside the top ten by lap 14. Steady progress continued and the eight-time World Champion would take ninth at the flag, a solid result considering the fall.

The entire Repsol Honda Team now head directly to Japan for Honda’s home race at the Motegi circuit.

“If you just looked at the final result and see ninth you wouldn’t know the whole story of our race – but to achieve what could be considered our ‘normal’ result after a crash is a positive. It was a really small crash but I was pushing very hard to stay in the slip stream of the bikes ahead, I went a bit wide and just fell. I came into this race with the motivation of the Sprint podium, so when I saw Pecco and Martin make a mistake I decided I needed to push. This led to the mistake. The most important thing was finishing the race, overall our rhythm was very close to Quartararo so I think we can be overall happy with what we have done this weekend.”

“A great race today. I am super happy with our performance over the weekend and of course to finish in fifth position is a big boost for us. The team and I did a great job to understand the bike more, how you need to make the lap time and be fast this weekend. On the other hand, we had a small thing in the end of the race that meant I lost ground to Fabio and we dropped back. Finally in the end we were able to push and try to catch Binder after I almost crashed. It was a big save! But yeah, a really nice race overall and I have enjoyed my time in India. Let’s keep it up in Japan”.

AIR INDIA ENTERS CODESHARE AGREEMENT WITH AIX CONNECT

Chandigarh 25 September 2023: Air India, India’s leading global carrier, has entered into a codeshare agreement with AIX Connect (formerly known as Air Asia India).

Air India will add its ‘AI’ designator code to over 100 flights a day operated by AIX Connect on
21 routes. More routes under the codeshare agreement will be added progressively. Bookings for the codeshare flights are being opened across points of sale, for travel starting 27 September 2023.

The codeshare implementation enables Air India guests to connect seamlessly on AIX Connect’s route network to and from over 80 points across Air India’s extensive domestic and international network.

The scope of the agreement between the two airlines enables guests to receive their boarding passes at the first point of departure for all the travel sectors on a single ticket, and have their baggage checked-in through to their final destinations. Guests connecting from international to domestic flights will, however, need to clear customs at the first point of entry in India, in line with government regulations.

AIX Connect will honour the free baggage allowance mentioned on tickets issued by Air India. Air India guests connecting on to flights operated by AIX Connect will also be able to enjoy complimentary meals on board.

With the implementation of the codeshare agreement, Air India has expanded its domestic route network to 4 new destinations in India, namely Bagdogra, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, and Surat, in addition to the common destinations between the two airlines’ route networks. Customers from these originating cities will be able to connect to Air India’s wide international network over hubs at Delhi and Mumbai.

The codeshare agreement also enables AIX Connect to leverage Air India’s global distribution network, via the airline’s direct channels as well as its global travel agency network.

AIX Connect is a 100% subsidiary of Air India, which is in the process of being integrated with Air India Express (another 100% subsidiary of Air India) to ultimately form a single low-cost carrier within the Tata group’s airline business.

Optimistic accountants embrace AI as profession shows desire to learn and adapt

ACCA’s Digital Horizons report reflects on how accountants see the role technology will play in their future

Chandigarh, 21 September 2023: Financial
professionals share a sense of optimism about digital transformation including AI (artificial intelligence).

A survey among members of ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) sees a range of key organisational benefits
in adopting digital technologies including flexibility/adaptability, quality of products and services, sustainability performance, transparency and regulatory compliance (72%).

However, The
Digital Horizons survey
– which garnered 1,074 responses from ACCA members across the globe – noted that financial professionals still see the main benefit of technology as offering efficiency/process improvements: 52% ranked efficiency, internal process optimisation or cost savings
in their top three objectives when adopting a new technology.

Only 18% included competition-related reasons, such as responding to customer demands, enhancing market insights, introducing 24/7
capabilities, or maintaining competitive advantage.

Cost remains the top challenge when adopting technology, but organisational culture also remains a critical factor in successful
adoption.

Welcoming the report
Md. Sajid Khan, Director – India at ACCA said:
‘We know that finance and accountancy professionals in India are keen adopters of technology. They
see technology as empowering them and helping them add value. We look forward to seeing accountants continuing to learn about AI and using the benefits of AI to help transform business and accounting practices.’

The survey did see a more mixed response to how technology supports personal objectives. Productivity (cited by 85% of respondents),
collaboration (76%) and career development (65%) were all strong but fears over job security were apparent, only 30% saying technology was supportive in that respect. The impact on career development was notably positive, with many roundtable discussions revolving
around access to learning and more flexible opportunities.

Leadership emerged as a key theme in both the survey and the roundtables.
Alistair Brisbourne, head of technology research ACCA,
said:
‘Leadership is generally considered to be a cornerstone of successful innovation and yet it can seem
quite vague as a concept when applied to digital transformation. At its core, embracing digital leadership means fostering a culture of innovation, encouraging continuous learning, and being open to change.

‘When we analyse the findings, it is clear that leadership is a fundamental trait of the most innovative organisations,
and this tends to coincide with greater individual confidence amongst employees. Digital leaders inspire the confidence to embrace new tools and methodologies, such as AI and advanced analytics, which can dramatically transform processes.’

ACCA members show a high level of trust in artificial intelligence (AI). 70% agreed with the statement ‘AI can increase the amount
of time I have to focus on business-critical tasks’ – only 9% disagreed, with 15% neutral. They were less sure of the idea of AI performing business critical tasks (50% agreeing, 21% and 22% disagreeing or neutral) but even so the numbers reflected a sense
of optimism.

Although just under one-fifth report the implementation of AI within their organisation, and another 8% are trialling initiatives,
there are clearly great aspirations and a considerable opportunity to leverage these new capabilities.

Digital Horizons underlines the idea that the finance profession is well-situated to benefit from these technologies but realising
their potential could require a mindset shift – thinking beyond mere efficiency gains towards a deeper understanding of value – as well as an adaptation of skills and practices.

Brisbourne said:
‘To a significant extent, AI is still thought about in terms of a gradual evolution of existing processes.
From this perspective, the potential of AI is primarily in making the industry more efficient rather than thinking about how it could be fundamental to driving value related to new and existing demands.’

Basic AI literacy is key. Finance professionals must understand the capabilities, limitations and potential applications of AI
within their specific domains. Marrying technical skill sets with strategic understanding will be essential to harness the true potential of technologies such as AI.

Venus Remedies extends its oncology portfolio in South Eastern Europe with Serbian marketing approval for gemcitabine and docetaxel

Chandigarh, September 20, 2023: Signifying a major landmark in its pursuit of building on its oncology portfolio in South Eastern Europe, Venus Remedies Ltd, a well-known provider of affordable cancer drugs worldwide, has secured marketing authorisation from Serbia for gemcitabine and docetaxel, widely used chemotherapy drugs beneficial in the treatment of various types of cancer.

With this, the company has secured 511 marketing approvals for its oncology products across 66 countries.

Oncology drugs constitute the largest proportion of the Serbian pharmaceutical market (projected to reach US$397.40m in 2023), where Venus Remedies has secured five marketing approvals, all in the oncology space. The high prevalence of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, pancreatic cancer and cancers of the lung and intestine is a key driver of the global oncology market, which was valued at US$ 286.04 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach US$ 536.01 billion by 2029 at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.2 per cent from 2021 to 2030.

Terming the achievement as another important step towards achieving the company’s goal of emerging as a leading oncology medicine supplier from India in South Eastern Europe and the Balkan region, Aditi K. Chaudhary, President, International Business, Venus Remedies, said, “We have more than 40 marketing authorisations in South Eastern Europe and Balkan region, including nine for oncology drugs, and we are now banking on the product registrations for gemcitabine and docetaxel from Serbia to pave the way for faster approvals for cancer medicines in other countries in this part of Europe.”

Extending its reach in the Balkans and Eastern Europe, Venus Remedies secured a marketing authorisation for gemcitabine from Bosnia a few months ago, which was followed by marketing approvals for docetaxel from Georgia and two other key cancer drugs from Moldova.

“These marketing approvals will not only enable us to expand our operations to new geographies but also reaffirm our commitment to open new avenues for advanced cancer treatment. The marketing authorisation from Serbia is a significant milestone that will help improve access to affordable cancer drugs in the region.” said Aditi K. Chaudhary.

After a two-year open innovation process, these recommendations will guide companies and capital providers towards more informed decision-making and ultimately contribute to a shift in global financial flows toward nature-positive outcomes and the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The release of the TNFD’s 14 disclosure recommendations and implementation guidance comes at a critical time, with rapidly growing interest across policymakers, regulators, asset owners, asset managers and leading global companies, on nature and biodiversity issues.

The recommendations build on those of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and are consistent with the global sustainability standards of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the impact materiality approach used by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and incorporated into the new European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

Importantly, the TNFD recommendations are also aligned with the requirement of Target 15 of the Global Biodiversity Framework for corporate reporting.

The Climate Pledge and C40 Cities Partner to Launch Laneshift, an International Initiative to Decarbonize Freight Trucks in Developing Countries

The Climate Pledge committed $10M to C40 Cities to kick-start the development and deployment of zeroemission electric trucks and charging infrastructureacross major cities in India and Latin America

SEATTLESeptember 19, 2023—The Climate Pledge—co-founded by Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN)and Global Optimism—and C40 Cities today launched Laneshift, a partnership to tackle carbon emissions through zero-emission freight by reimagining medium- and heavy-duty shipping vehicles and the routes they travel.

Road freight is a major source of air pollution and one of the most important sectors to decarbonize, but it’s also one of the most challenging. And according to the Global Commercial Vehicle Roadmap for reaching 100% zero emission commercial trucks sales by 2040, cities will need to be saturated with electric vehicle (EV) trucks by 2030 in order to meet that target.[1] Laneshift is designed to help make that possible. In partnership with cities, Laneshift will accelerate the development EV infrastructure and the deployment of EV trucks across cities in India (Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune) and Latin America (Bogotá and Medellin, Colombia; Curitiba and Rio de Janeiro,Brazil; Quito, Ecuador; and Mexico City, Mexico), reducing emissions, cleaning up the air, generating green jobs, and working towards a just transition for workers.

Amazon continues to decarbonize its own transportation network with multiple EV partnerships around the world. In 2022, Amazon had more than 9,000 electric delivery vehicles (EDV) in its global fleet and delivered over 145 million packages using EVs in the U.S. and Europe. Today, Amazon has more than 5,000 Rivian EDVs operating in the U.S., and it recently announced the first 300 to hit the road in Germany, helping the company achieve its goal of having 100,000 Rivian EVs on the road by 2030. The company is also on track to have 10,000 EVs in India by 2025.

Apprenticeship demand anticipates 70-80% surge within Auto-Sector, says TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship

Chandigarh, 18th September 2023: India’s automobile sector is poised for substantial growth in apprentice recruitment, with expectations of an impressive surge ranging from 70% to 80%, according to TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, the country’s premier privately-owned Degree Apprenticeship program. TeamLease has gathered this data through a careful assessment of industry relations and an in-depth understanding of the apprenticeship market’s demand dynamics. The anticipated boom in apprentice recruitment can be largely attributed to the sector’s robust performance, which is influenced by macroeconomic factors and positive industry sentiments across all its segments.

One significant factor contributing to this anticipated growth is the extension of the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for the automotive sector. Originally scheduled to run from 2022-23 to 2027-28, this scheme’s extension promises to usher in a new era of growth and increased employment opportunities within the sector.

This encouraging trend is evident in various regions, including the states of Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and metropolitan cities like Pune, Chennai, and Bengaluru. To meet the evolving demands of this dynamic industry, there is a pressing need for comprehensive skilling and re-skilling initiatives, particularly to align with technological transformations such as EVs and connected-car technologies. These programs also provide competitive stipends ranging from INR 12,500 to INR 13,300 per month.

Sharing his views on this remarkable surge, Mr. Sumit Kumar, Chief Business Officer, TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, said, “We believe that apprenticeship programs are the foundation of skilled talent development in the automotive industry. The extension of the PLI scheme, with its ₹25,938 crore investment, is a testament to the sector’s immense growth potential. The government’s expectation of creating 1.48 lakh fresh jobs is proof of the scheme’s potential impact. As of now, approximately 21,123 workers have already been employed, showcasing the industry’s rapid growth. However, this accelerated pace has also shed light on the skills gap within the sector.”

The extension reinforces India’s standing as a global manufacturing hub, especially in the field of electric vehicles (EVs). Notably, the ‘Component Champion Incentive Scheme,’ a part of the broader PLI scheme for the automobile sector, has attracted approximately 75 new entrants, including industry giants such as Maruti Suzuki, Hero MotoCorp, Bosch, Hero Cycles, Minda Corporation, and Toyota Kirloskar Auto Parts.

He further added, “Through degree apprenticeship program, young talents will be empowered with specialized knowledge in cutting-edge areas such as Electric Powertrain Technology, Battery Technology, and Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure. This hands-on experience equips them to excel in roles that are not only pivotal for the future of automotive manufacturing but also address the current industry demand. Thus, we are not only bridging the talent gap but also ensuring a brighter and more technologically advanced future for both the industry and its workforce.”

Chandigarh, September 18, 2023: This Drivers’ Day, Mahindra Truck and Bus Division (MTBD), a part of the Mahindra Group, will award scholarships for the daughters of truck drivers, through the Mahindra Saarthi Abhiyaan. Project Mahindra Saarthi Abhiyaan is committed to make a small contribution towards transforming the lives of these girls by supporting their right to a higher education.

Mahindra is one of the first commercial vehicle manufacturers to pioneer this initiative and felicitate the selected candidates with a scholarship of Rs.10,000/- along with a certificate in recognition of their achievement. This endeavour marks another significant milestone in Mahindra Truck and Bus Division’s ongoing commitment to the Truck driver community, which was initiated with the Mahindra Saarthi Abhiyaan in 2014. IHCL FORAYS IN CONTINENTAL EUROPE, SIGNS A TAJ IN FRANKFURT, GERMANY

Frankfurt’s landmark hotel, after extensive renovations will join the illustrious list of iconic Taj hotels around the world. Signed under an operating lease arrangement, it will reopen in 2025.

Chandigarh, September, 15, 2023: Grappling with groundwater depletion, Patan district in Gujarat has an overall area of 387,101.53 hectares with 154,385 cultivators, making agriculture the most popular occupation where most cultivators (58%) are small and marginal farmers. After discussions with farmers, DCB Bank’s implementation partner, Ashray, found that during heavy rains, waterlogging damages crops, triggers soil erosion and disrupts fences, causing income loss due to slow water absorption.

Over time, both agriculture and dairy are facing the impact due to water scarcity and water salinity. This adversely impacts livelihood options. Moreover, adequate region-specific strategies for boosting fodder yield can positively impact cattle productivity. Fodder is dependent available water supply, as the local ‘Rachko’ crops provide green fodder for only four months annually. Thereafter, farmers face difficulties in storing fodder as it rots because of moisture.

It is in this space that DCB Bank sought to assist the local community with the help of experts brought in by the programme implementation agency Ashray. The community needs assessment was coopted with the programme. Ashray determined that the innovative ‘Holiya’ system, would be ideal in preventing crop damage from water inundation and conserving rainwater for year round agricultural use in Santalpur taluka, Patan district, Gujarat. Additionally, cultivating Napier grass – a valuable livestock fodder resource for the community was a part of the package of practices for the community. Aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, the collaborative project contributes to better health, access to water, sustainable livelihood, and biodiversity conservation. The ‘Holiya’ structure was instrumental to enhance the quality of groundwater. Given the harsh topography and salinity issue, ‘Holiya’ intake of non-saline rainwater suppressed six times its volume of below the ground saline water.

Requiring around four months from September to December 2023, this sustainable livelihood initiative involved the construction of 40 Holiyas across eight tribal villages in Santalpur taluka: Bamroli, Jarusha, Korda, Unrot, Zekda, Dabhi, Jamvada and Zanzansar. After consulting with the Gram Panchayat representatives and local administration, the direct beneficiaries numbering 40 were selected. The salutary impact is widespread with around 1,200 indirect beneficiaries from two hundred local community families using Holiya water for household purposes. Additionally, forty farmer beneficiaries received 2,500 Napier grass saplings that were planted in the fields. The improved availability of water for farming enabled farmers to cultivate both Ravi and Kharif crop in the year, a valuable outcome of better agricultural productivity.

Moving the needle of sustainability, Napier grass yielded five yearly harvests from a single planting. The outcome? Better livestock productivity with green fodder. While the highly nutritious Napier grass has improved milk quality, the groundwater table has been elevated, and reduced salinity ensures that farmers practice year-round cropping and garner better income from the harvest. Better moisture content has also improved soil quality and gradually improve land health. Significantly, crop damage caused by clogged rainwater has been controlled, indicating better days are here for local communities.

Uber’s Driver Advisory Council expands to 9 cities

Introduces changes basis feedback to enhance transparency and ease of use

Chandigarh, 15 September 2023: India’s first Driver Advisory Council (DAC), formed as a pioneering effort to provide gig workers a platform to discuss important issues and improve their platform experience, has expanded to 9 cities. The council is a flagship initiative led by Aapti Institute, a Bengaluru-based think tank, that serves as a third-party Independent Review Board (IRB), in collaboration with Uber. It represents the interests of tens of thousands of driver partners across cars, auto-rickshaws, and motorbikes, and facilitates a better two-way dialogue between them and the platform. The new Council will have representation from 3 new cities – Jaipur, Guwahati and Kochi, in addition to the existing 6 including Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai. The number of DAC Council members this year will be 45.

At an event held in Central Delhi, DAC members interacted with Uber’s global visiting executive,Andrew Byrne, Vice President and Global Head of Public Policy at Uber, and shared details on their experience. Dr. Sarayu Natarajan, Founder, Aapti Institute, facilitated a discussion ‘Shaping Platform – Worker Dialogue in the Gig Economy’, with Dr. Dhanya MB, Fellow, V.V. Giri National Labour Institute; Marico Ouchi, Senior Technical Specialist on Social Protection, International Labour Organization; Mike Orgill, Senior Director, Public Policy & Government Relations, Uber for the APAC region; and, Aishwarya Raman, Executive Director, OMI Foundation.

Uber introduced several changes over the last year as per recommendations from DAC members. To further enhance transparency and ease of use for driver partners on the platform, Uber has implemented the following changes this year:

Addressing working capital issues: To make the choice of cash vs. online redundant, we had introduced a daily payment settlement process ‘Daily Pay’ which helped drivers ‘cash out’ on their online earnings the next day from Monday to Thursday, and on Monday for Friday to Sunday. Based on feedback from DAC members, Uber has now advanced the payment disbursement time to the morning which helps drivers use that money for refueling etc. We also provide cash-free parking facilities at 9 airports (Delhi, Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Guwahati) around India to ensure a smooth ride for Uber drivers.

More transparency for driver partners: To empower the driver with more information before the beginning of a trip, Uber had introduced features like upfront destination and payment mode on the booking screen last year. This reduced friction between drivers and riders. Now, the experience has been enhanced further with the visibility of estimated fare that they will earn before accepting a trip. Also, after the trip, the electronic receipt of the trip that the drivers receive in-app will have clear demarcation of the money earned by them, and the money deducted as Uber commission and other outflows such as government taxes, airport parking fee, etc.

More choice to choose trips: To give drivers more options to choose a trip that works best for them, we’re running a pilot on a feature called ‘Extra Choice’. This will enable a driver partner to select from a larger number of available trip offers in the area. This will address feedback from DAC members about having more choice and increase trip acceptance rates on driver sides, which in turn, will reduce trip search time for riders.

Commenting on the occasion, Shiva Shailendran, Director – Operations, Uber India, and South Asia, said, “Drivers have played a pivotal role over the last 10 years in our journey in India and we remain committed to doing what’s best for them. The Driver Advisory Council is our effort to provide drivers a platform to share feedback on what matters most to them. We will continue to provide an open, accessible, and rewarding platform for driver partners and take steps that improve their overall experience with Uber.”

Sharing her views on DAC’s journey so far, Dr. Sarayu Natarajan, Founder, Aapti Institute, said, “As the gig economy continues to grow, the gig worker and platform relationship is also evolving. The Driver Advisory Council is India’s first independent third-party mediated forum that promotes participatory governance. The enthusiasm, participation, and intent of DAC members to drive positive change has been inspiring. We believe that this can serve as a model for the larger gig economy, and participative dialogue can pave the way for shaping gig work regulations, as well as policies of platforms such as Uber.”

Driver partners that form a part of the Council are active driver partners on the Uber platform who nominate themselves after meeting certain eligibility parameters. Finally, through meetings with the IRB, the driver partners are tested on their potential to contribute to solutions to prevailing challenges. These driver partners represent their community for a year, after which the selection process is repeated.

Since its inception in March 2022, the Council has been part of 3 in-person sessions and two online sessions. Critical topics discussed during these meetings included earnings, product enhancements, social security, app experience, and safety, among others. The Driver Advisory Council is a global best practice for Uber with similar models in the US, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Uber continues to stay committed to supporting the rights of gig workers using the Uber platform.

Bank of India raises Rs. 2,000 Crores at 7.88% in Tier II Bond Offering!

Trust, corruption and sustainable development are interconnected issues in public’s attitude towards tax

Accountants remain the most trusted players in tax according to the ACCA, IFAC and CA ANZ biennial global survey

Chandigarh, September 13, 2023: The Public Trust in Tax survey which questioned 7,700 members of the public across the globe shows that accountants have a major role to play in addressing corruption, which negatively impact on attitudes towards tax in economies.

Results show that 53.8% consider corruption a major factor, however most people believe the role of professional accountants contributes to improving tax systems by making them more efficient (59%), more effective (57%), and fairer (55%).

The findings follow ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), IFAC (the International Federation of Accountants), and CA ANZ (Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand) expanding their biennial G20 Public Trust in Tax survey – which this time omitted Russia and included New Zealand – to address not only corruption but also the issues of sustainable development and corruption, and how these two interconnect with trust in the tax system. The results are clear.

Corruption has a significant impact on attitudes towards tax in economies across the globe, with over half of G20 respondents citing it as a major factor.

At the same time, 68% of respondents in G20 countries see at least some connection between tax and sustainable development, and 57% would be prepared to pay more tax to support it.

In this context, the continued high levels of trust in professional accountants are more important than ever. The results shows that they remain the single most trusted stakeholder in tax in every G20 country, as it has been the case in every biennial G20 Public Trust in Tax survey since the initiative began in 2017.

Md. Sajid Khan, Director – India of ACCA, says: ‘Professional accountants are an essential element of the tax ecosystem in India and around the world. It’s reassuring to see that this global survey reveals that India has the second highest levels of trust in professional accountants, with 72.5% of respondents saying that they ‘trust’ or ‘highly trust’ accountants over any other information source.’

Kevin Dancey, CEO of IFAC, says: ‘The impact of corruption on trust in tax has been an emerging theme in our recent surveys, particularly in our 2022 Global Perspectives report, which focuses on jurisdictionsoutside of the G20. The 4E solar financing scheme offers TPSSL’s customers an array of compelling benefits, including the most competitive interest rates and loan limit to meet the requirement of the MSME sector.

TPSSL and SIDBI has also announced the launch ofThe Big Solar Fest at the Global SME Finance Forum 2023 to offer zero processing fees for the upcoming festival season to encourage the widespread adoption of solar energy among MSMEs. The Big Solar Fest will spread awareness on the most competitive financing offerings with zero percent processing fees for the upcoming festival season. This additional incentive will serve to expedite the green journey of the MSME sector, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable growth and clean energy solutions.

Chandigarh/Bhubaneswar, September 7, 2023: Tata Steel Special Economic Zone Limited (TSSEZL) and Avaada GreenH2 Private Limited, Green Hydrogen arm of integrated energy enterprise of Avaada Group, today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a green hydrogen and green ammonia project at Gopalpur Industrial Park in Ganjam district of Odisha.

Under the definitive agreement, Avaada Group will acquire 120 acres of land in TSSEZL’s Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP), to set up a 0.5 MTPA green hydrogen/ammonia production facility.

The MoU was signed between Manikanta Naik, Managing Director, TSSEZL, and Prashant Choubey, President, Avaada Group, in the presence of Hemant Sharma, IAS, Principal Secretary, Industries Department and Chairman, Odisha Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) and Industrial Promotion and Investment Corporation of Odisha Limited (IPICOL), Government of Odisha, and Bhupendra Singh Poonia, IAS, Managing Director, IDCO & IPICOL.

Hemant Sharma, IAS, Principal Secretary, Industries Department and Chairman, IDCO & IPICOL stated,“Odisha’s roadmap for the green fuels sector is both comprehensive and ambitious. The addition of Avaada Group to our partnership ecosystem is an endorsement of our strategy. We welcome Avaada to the Odisha family and look forward to achieving new milestones together.”

This green ammonia will be produced from green hydrogen, and the production facilities will be powered by renewable energy.

Furthermore, participants will enjoy the security of insurance coverage provided by the Employees State Insurance Corporation (ESIC), ensuring their well-being and peace of mind.

According to industry estimates, the unemployment rate in India stood at 7.33% in 2022 and the dropout level at the secondary level stands at 12.6% in 2021-22. States like Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Odisha, & West Bengal see the highest dropout at the secondary (9-10) level due to poverty and quality of education. The work-integrated learning program we are launching addresses many of these challenges and also assists corporates in nurturing well-trained workforce. It achieves this by providing real-time talent availability, enhancing workforce productivity through structured training with 70% on-the-job exposure, and optimizing talent costs through a ‘build vs. buy’ approach. It is also expected to improve retention rates by an impressive 15%-20% through educational linkage. The newly launched card is a RuPay NCMC Prepaid Card that will facilitate the seamless and convenient customer commuting experience and ensure easy digital ticketing fare payments in metro, buses, water ferries, parking, etc., through a single card. In addition, individuals can also use this card for making retail and e-commerce payments.

With a continuous and uninterrupted focus on innovation, and customer-centricity, SBI entered NCMC programs with transit operators in 2019. Keppel and DBS Bank sign MOU to scale up sustainable urban development and digitalisation solutions in Asia

Chandigarh, 4 September 2023 – Keppel and DBS Bank (DBS) today announced that they have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly scale up sustainable urbanisation and digitalisation solutions in Asia, with a focus on India given DBS’ increasing presence in one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Amazon to invest US$15 million in nature-based projects to support communities, climate resilience, and biodiversity in the Asia-Pacific region

  • Amazon’s Right Now Climate Fund expands its support for biodiversity and climate resilience projects in the Asia-Pacific region, following nine similar investments in communities across Europe.
  • The fund will invest an initial US$3 million into projects in India, beginning with a first project in the Western Ghats to plant 300,000 trees – creating carbon sinks as well as enhancing wildlife conservation and livelihoods.

Chandigarh, 4 September 2023 – Amazon today announced a US$15 million allocation for nature-based solutions in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region. This allocation draws from Amazon’s US$100 million Right Now Climate Fund, which was created in 2019 to support nature conservation and restoration projects that enhance climate resilience and biodiversity, while driving social and environmental benefits in communities where they operate.

“The Asia-Pacific region is home to vast forests and rich coastal environments, but it is also highly vulnerable to climate change, biodiversity loss and land degradation.” said Kara Hurst, Amazon’s Global VP for Sustainability. “To protect the region from the impacts of climate change and preserve biodiversity, we will need both large-scale and local action – and we’re committed to investing in both.”

The first US$3 million from the fund’s APAC allocation will support nature-based projects in India. For its first project, Amazon will be working with the Centre for Wildlife Studies (CWS) to support communities and conservation efforts in the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is home to more than 30% of all of India’s wildlife species, including the world’s largest population of wild Asiatic elephants and tigers. Amazon’s funding of US$1 million will help CWS establish the “Wild Carbon” program, which will support 10,000 farmers in planting and maintaining one million fruit-bearing, timber and medicinal trees.

Amazon’s direct contribution will enable CWS to partner with 2,000 family farms and plant 300,000 trees over three years. The trees will help to expand land area for animals and reduce human-wildlife conflict through the creation of natural buffer zones, while also bringing in higher-value trees for the farmers compared to other subsistence crops. CWS will also use project funds to develop state-of-the-art monitoring systems using drone and remote sensing technology and on-the-ground surveys to verify program outcomes, advancing research on the potential positive impact of farmers on reforestation opportunities.

“We have designed the Wild Carbon program with an unwavering commitment to wildlife conservation, and also poverty alleviation through livelihood support. By partnering with and incentivizing farmers to be part of the solution, we will be able to facilitate buffer habitats for tigers, elephants and other endangered species,” said CWS Executive Director Dr. Krithi Karanth. “Amazon’s support enables us to plan and build a program that is self-sustaining in the long-term. The farmers will receive upfront support to select tree types that serve both their livelihoods and the wildlife, whilst also receiving technical assistance, agroforestry training, and support for replanting failed saplings.”

Projects are selected based on their potential positive impact on local communities and livelihoods, as well as the magnitude and tangibility of benefit to the environment. Further investments in projects located in India and other APAC countries will be announced in coming months.

The Right Now Climate Fund’s allocation for India and APAC complements its broader sustainability and decarbonization efforts in the region. In 2019, Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge, committing to reach net-zero carbon by 2040 – 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement. The Pledge now has more than 400 signatories across 55 industries and 38 countries, which work together on initiatives that preserve the natural world and enable decarbonizing technologies. Nine Indian companies have joined the Pledge: BluPine Energy, CSM Technologies India, Godi, Greenko, HCL, Infosys, Mahindra Logistics, Tech Mahindra, and UPL. In 2022, Amazon launched six utility-scale projects in India, and the company is on a path to powering its global operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025 – five years ahead of the initial 2030 target. This includes three wind-solar hybrid projects located in Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka, as well as three solar farms in Rajasthan, representing a total renewable energy capacity of 920 megawatts. Amazon India has also committed to deploying 10,000 electric vehicles in its delivery fleet by 2025, and is well on its way to achieving this goal.

Amazon supports other nature programmes in APAC: in 2022, Amazon and Conservation International established the International Blue Carbon Institute, an organization based in Singapore that aims to mitigate climate change and protect coastal communities.
